On this Mother's Day, I'd like to pause and reflect a bit on some of the things my mother has taught me. She is a selfless person; the most generous soul I have ever met. She taught me by example to give with open arms without expecting something in return. She taught me to show empathy and have compassion; in her eyes, even the problem children she teaches are just reaching out for attention and seeking love. She looks past their tough and troubled exteriors and sees a soul in need. She taught me (well, tried to teach me,) patience. Somehow, she has no problem waiting in the slower driving lanes because she knows swerving around traffic won't get you there that much faster (I haven't quite grasped this yet). She taught me the power of a well-educated woman, always pushing me to take school and my education seriously. Working full time, taking care of me, and active in her church community, she taught me how to be independent, successful, and goal-oriented. (Though she would never say it,) she fully embodies the "do no harm but take no shit" mentality. She taught me to be brave and to stand up for myself, especially when no one else would. Most importantly, she taught me how to love fiercely. I will never know how she put up with me, my strong-headedness, or my overwhelmingly independent spirit, but I know I wouldn't be half the woman I am today without her love, guidance, and friendship. Here's to you, Mom. Thank you for all you have done for me, all you have taught me, and all you continue to do for me. I love you.Â
