Have you seen the image where Julia is underwater with the red silks and her head is tilted back? She looks stunning, right?! Well believe it or not, tilting your head back underwater is extremely uncomfortable. Water rushes up your nose and if you're not used to that, it can be very disconcerting. So, what are our options for still getting these dramatic elegant shots for clients who might not be quite as comfortable as Julia underwater? Well, we can just have you blow bubbles out of your nose, blocking water flow in, but then you really can't see your face in the image. You could pinch your nose shut with your fingers and only take your fingers off once your head is in position; in my experience this doesn't solve anything and still leads to water up your nose. You could wear a nose clip, but then your nostrils are flattened and believe me, no amount of Photoshop makes your nose look normal with a nose clip on!
So, what other options are there?! Frustrated with this dilemma, I went on a hunt for the perfect solution. Here's what I found:
It's called the "Sinus Saver". It's essentially an inverted nose clip that you stick up your nostrils, rather than outside of them. The company is based out of Los Angeles, California (YAY for supporting local business!), and were invented for surfers. To find the right size you'll use Q tips to measure the inside of your nostril. If you can fit 8 or more Q tips, buy a large. 6 Q tips: medium, 5 or less: small or extra small.
On using them: it will require a couple times to get the hang of it, so make sure to buy it before your session and try it on at home (maybe in the shower?). To put it in your nose, you'll need to fold it, insert, and let it unfold once it is inside your nose.
